Understanding The Poem
Question 1.

What does the bird in the poem announce? How is this related to the title, ‘Coming’?


Answer:

The bird in the poem announced the arrival of the spring with its beautiful song. It is an indication that the nature is getting ready to welcome the spring. The title ‘Coming’ that something is going to come, here it is the spring that is going to come.

Why is the speaker’s childhood described as ‘a forgotten boredom’?


Answer:

The writer might not have any beautiful memories in his childhood, as his daily routine contained a boring time-table. So he was not able to recall any activities that he did as a child, which means he has forgotten those things. Hence he described his childhood as a ‘forgotten boredom’.

What causes the element of surprise when the child comes on the scene of ‘adult reconciling’?


Answer:

The writer is very happy that he forgot his childhood which was boring. Now he transformed into a child and is enjoying the nature around him. He is happy to see the adults reconciling just like a child who doesn’t know what is happening but smiles just because the adults are happy. Here the writer might have wanted to display the innocence of a child.

Answer:

Here the light and the houses were compared to adults and the thrush is compared to a child. When adults are reconciling the child smiles though he doesn’t know what is happening, in the same way thrush is also feeling happy to see the light bathing the houses though it doesn’t know what it is.

Spring is the most beautiful and most loved season by everyone round the clock. Writer described this scenery in a gorgeous way. The calm roof tops were completely filled with the yellow light from the sun. He enjoys the beautiful scenery of the nature that is getting ready to welcome the spring.

Comment on the use of the phrase ‘fresh-peeled voice’.


Answer:

This phrase is used to describe the voice of the humming which is singing “it will be spring soon”. Its song is showing an astonishing effect on the brick work of the houses. Its voice is so pleasant that the writer loved to hear it again and again and realized him what he missed as a child.
